Reviews / KJW KP-08 Ongoing review.
« on: August 03, 2013, 09:00:21 PM »
This is my first airsoft purchase, so its taken me the better part of four months to decide upon what I wanted. I settled on a KJW model because overall their reviews are strongly in their favor, an overall high amount of cross compatibility between makes was also more clear with them.

Thus far Ive had it for two days so this is more of an initial review, but a long term review is in the making.

Thus far, I have fired around 14 magazines through it off of propane, the pistol came well lubed and while I did take a look around it, it was plenty lubed for testing. Its stock mag nor the WE magazine purchased with it through the Holy Cow magazine special are running perfectly out of the box, no leaks and other than the WE mag not locking open for the first few magazines no ill issues have been seen from either sense.

The pistol is metal where one would expect it to be, as a real steel shooter, I was somewhat disturbed by the light weight of the pistol, but after looking it over its well enough designed to be light and well made. The slide and sights appear to be metal, the outer barrel, hop chamber, guide rod and recoil plunger are all metal, same goes for the trigger and hammer, the transfer bar is also metal but I believe the grip safety is some form of polymer much like the frame itself. Speaking of which the frame is quite nice, the texturing is good and gives it a positive grip, but isnt overbearing or too extreme like some grip designs can be. I noticed a little outward bowing from the back strap and hammer spring tube just below the safety but its not a deal breaker.

The slide to frame fit is pretty sloppy, but Ive chalked that up to being normal for airsoft to ensure the gas can properly cycle the pistol. Its quite the rattly little thing. Speaking of fit, lets talk about its counterpart finish.

The finish is pretty lacking really, Im not sure what kind of paint was used on it but after shooting it, not dropping or mishandling it, Ive already begun to notice some pretty serious wear on the finish, its gone in some areas and I can see along the front of the slide along the recoil housing where the finish is beginning to rub off from simple contact with the plastic frame. This is a kicker because the satin/matte black is really quite nice.

The pistol is decent on gas too, not great but overall not bad. A 7 second fill from propane got a consistent mag and a half to three quarters off each fill at around 85 degrees F with pretty heavy humidity. If I babied it and paced the shots it would have got a lot further. Overall it was very consistent, I dont know the FPS as I dont own a chrono but I didnt experience any high or low shots that I can say for certain werent caused by the BB's(Matrix.23's.) themselves.

So lets have a break down for ease of skimming now.

Fit and finish 3/5- The paint is pretty bad, chipping and rubbing off after about 14 magazines worth of plinking. Also, and this might be only mine or a design quirk, but the slide lock does not release unless manually dropped, racking the slide does not release.
Gas efficiency 3.5/5- Its not great, but its not horrible either and given the metal slide its going to consume a little more gas. It could be made better with some tuning which I plan to do but its more than enough for out of the box play.
Handling 4/5- The trigger is shockingly good, quite short and with very little over travel, though it might be a tad squishy, nothing a little filing work work help greatly. It feels good in the hand, and feels about as big as a typical real steel fat stack 1911 frame, so it might be a tad big for people with smaller hands, I have a little issue hitting the mag release without twisting the gun a bit. The three dots are clear and well defined, they wouldnt look bad on real steel even.

Are you asking if it would be possible to replace the pistol grip with a more traditional angled 'sawn off' stock look? Plausible and I'll be interested in this as well as I'd like to make a compact multi shot to keep bundled on my back.

Odds are, yes you could, I'd bet money that under the stock is some form of comercial style Shotgun rear end. Either way it can be done, but the stock itself is going to run about as much as these shotguns to to begin with. Even take off  Mossberg stocks are 35-50 bucks.

What would you all say would be a safe offer for it then? I'm not afraid of possible leaks as I'm an extremely competent airsmith

Hypothetically, someone is selling a We 1911 MEU kit. Its seemingly well kept, 4 working magazines and a mock suppressor. Its got some internal upgrades as well: reinforced nozzle, 120 nozzle return spring, new madbull bucking, and a tight bore barrel.

They are wanting 200 for it, being as new as I am I dont have the built in knowledge of parts and what things bring on the used market so I dont know if this is the right price, a deal to jump on or over what it should be. So Im gunna leave it to you all.

The foregrip would be obscenely easy with a tac railed lower. The Comp wouldnt been much harder if airsoft 1911's use a barrel bushing up front either, I dont know.

Thanks for these- Ive not been to So Go to play as of yet so I didnt know what to expect. Looks like some pretty tight quarters indeed. Hopefully after my next paycheck(This one is going into my car-hurray for needing new tires.) I can get down there and play a few rounds.

No no, you didnt repeat anything nor would I mind if you did! The whole reason I posted this so early was to get input from those more knowledgeable than myself. :)

I need to update the photos but since I havent I'll just tell you, I rebuilt it into two separate chambers, a dump chamber for volume sits behind the main one, with a sealed tail on the bolt keeping the pressure back. When the solenoid impulse dumps air into the rear of the bolt chamber it pushes the whole bolt forward, the dump chamber seal disengages and dumps its volume out down the spine of the bolt, firing the BB.

As for hopup interference, I dont think it would be an issue, at the most it moves about .300 back and forth overall, and the whole thing could simply be set back somewhat in order to allow for any of those issues.

My only current worry is how small everything is, Im not entirely certain that the bolt would be able to withstand the forces its put under for extended periods due to the design and its small size. im thinking I might redesign it or perhaps make it larger overall once I have a gearbox I can measure out and mock up for size reference.

12
Well in the above design its a little limited in dwell time because its not completely controlled by the solenoid and air- theres the spring that will eventually overcome it. Its not that bad though as FASOR(Froward Air:Spring On Return) has been around a long time and its usually not an issue.

That being said I realized that given the small size, it would be rather hard to use a spring light enough for such a small amount of air to overcome and still reliably return the bolt to the rearward position. Right now Ive added a dedicated dump chamber behind the bolt with a tail on the bolt that seals it until the impulse from the solenoid pushes the bolt forward- allowing the seal between chambers to be opened and let the chamber empty down the bolt. Im kind of resticted on how large i can make the chambers currently because I dont have a gearbox to measure at the moment- something I intend to remedy soon enough.

General Airsoft / Old is the new Pneu. Project/Design 56K beware
« on: May 02, 2013, 09:48:18 PM »
Hi all- Im still new here so I dont have much to stand on, so lt me introduce myself in a more full manner as an lead in to the below project.

My name is Landon Collins, otherwise known by my online handle Foughtwolf, and among other things I have a passion for design. Over the last couple of years through the use of Google Sketchup(Because I am too poor to get Solid Works currently and took to Sketchup like a duck to water.) Ive begun working on a number of different designs, primarily revolving around paintball and real steel- both of these when combined have actually proven quite useful for my current project depicted below in its infancy.

The Goal: to create a electro pneumatic airsoft rifle; This is not new territory Im aware, Polarstar beat me by a few years but I find their price outrageous- but thats just my personal opinion on the matter. The true goal however is simple, design and produce or market a design that tips the scale at half that of the Polarstar Fusion engine.
Impossible? Far from it. Easy? Now thats the million dollar question.

Lets start; Heres a mess of parts I imported from past projects and ongoing ones, mostly real steel stuff pulled off my pet project the Liberty Rifle.

Depicted: A mess of parts.

But whats that wee little box down to the right hand side? Lets take a closer look shall we?

Oh, its an AEG cylinder and nozzle of some kind-right?

Now Im just confused, whats that thing running down the center?
Allow me to show you.

Thats...helpful?
Let me cut the whole thing in half

Better?
Maybe- I see lots of o-rings and a spring?

Yes, now lets delve right into it and give you all a good explanation as to just what you are seeing and how it functions. Lets remove the o-rings and spring briefly to clear up some of the clutter, and add a dollop of paint so we can identify each part.

Thats better: Here we have the bolt, chamber, and guide rod.
Please note that because the spring return is very new the chamber hasnt been stretched enough to allow for the compressed spring, just an oversite for now as i determine if I wish to keep a spring return or go for a different solenoid setup like I had planned originally but cut for the simplicity of a spring.

Above we see the bolt has been forced forward to the end of its travel by the solenoid impulse of air (either from a dump chamber or the solenoid itself if there is enough volume and pressure for the relatively small object airsoft gunsfire, im not great at that kind of math.) and the ingress of air has filled the rear of the chamber, forcing it forward past the inner seals on the guide rod, at which time it vents down the hollow bolt and propels the BB down the barrel. When the air pressure behind the bolt has lowered enough for the spring to overcome it, it will be pushed backwards once more into its resting position, ready for the next impulse from the solenoid to fire again.

Now do bear in mind this project has only been going on for the past month at best and only taken priority in the last week or so. The reason I show it is because I want the input of players who have more experience than I. Community participation has always been key in all my designs because I find that there are always those with more knowledge out there who are willing to help.

Ive been in there once when you guys opened some years back, the one by Tracker that is. Had an iffy experience but Ive actually chatted with you before on another forum about it. Good (New) impression. :)

Maybe once I get some prototyping done I'll bring it in for you all to see. Til then I'm dipping my toe into playing.

Hello there!

Alright hold the guns for a second while I explain myself;
I am a long time paintball player, and Im looking to play some airsoft, Im also a bit of an amateur airsmith and gunsmith, so Im a bit of a tradesmen ontop of that. Im also getting into all sorts of fun designing of various items and one of them is a GBB rifle system that uses standard AEG magazines with an onboard co2 or green gas tank. Or at least thats the hope. Id like to have someone show me a typical GBB rifles internals perhaps in person so I can get an idea how they really function as Ive had the chance to mess with AEG's before.

Ok, now you can shoot me. :)
