Smith Optics Boogie Regulator Goggles
« on: January 05, 2013, 12:32:38 PM »
This item must excel at what I understand it was designed for. That is, military HALO jumps. They will also work well as motorcycle goggles, parasailing, hang gliding, ATV'ing. Any activity where you need eye protection and keep moving forward is just made for this guy. I'll give them four stars.

That motion thing is the important part. You need that to keep air circulating through the holes in the lens so as to avoid fogging of the lens. I was shown this item at an Airsoft store in California and was told they were wonderful for Airsofting. They certainly looked the part, with a thick, tough-looking lens and big air holes and the fact that they were sold out except for the display gave me the idea they must be very popular. I think the salesman must play a lot of Rush-style games, though, where he's running forward because when my son put the goggles on to play they fogged up pretty quickly. He'd stop to reload or start sniping and they'd fog right up.

I have found that all it takes is the act of walking briskly forward to keep them clear so I don't fault the design. I even wore them on a long bicycle ride to see how they reacted to the wearer being REALLY hot and sweaty. Great during the ride but they fogged immediately when I stopped.

Long story short: great product, don't wear for Airsoft. It's a good thing I have a motorcycle so I can get some use out of them. Heck, I may get the smoke lens next time I need daytime goggles, they're so good.

Addendum: Changed to five stars. I gave it four stars but, really, it's a five star item that I bought for the wrong purpose and I shouldn't blame Smith Optics for that. Got a suggestion for goggles with good ventilation for indoor play? Please let me know!

^ Bingo. AMS is pushing those things pretty hard at their OPs be ause they're sponsored by them. Bash has a pair and he has yet to not have them fog up on him and that is despite using Cat Crap anti-fog which has been the best anti-fog we've used. I'll stick to my Wiley'sX.

Wiley X and ESS are both goggles I trust and I know SOGO usually has both in stock. Call them a day in advance and let them know what store your going to so they can bring inventory to you. (Ozark or Springield)
haha you're right, I was an idiot last night.

I used to have a pair of goggles that did the same thing. I now use the ESS Turbofans and I love them for CQB!

Everyone that knows me knows how i feel about this subject. I own a pair of  ESS Pro Goggles. I live and die by the hand of pro goggles... i feel that for indoors and outdoors that a exhaust fan is one of the best inventions i have ever seen. I also have traded my old pro goggles to McClane so i am not the only source for this info. The only issue that i have recieved with them is that the battery houseing only uses AA batteries. It would be nice if there was more power to them but they work amazingly.

Thanks to everyone who answered! All suggestions are being considered and I'm trying to figure out how to test them all. I did find a set of used ESS Profile NVG's a guy sold me extra cheap. They are kind of banged up but good enough for testing so if they work out I'll have to buy them new. Now if I could do the same with the others for comparison purposes life would be good.

I ran Boogies back at Mishko. I didn't have any major issues with fogging, but it is a problem to watch out for. It's probably inherent to the design since the lens sits so close to your face.

Snapping the "Regulator" system out helped me out with fogging a bit. I also use the bungee strap kit on mine, so it's a little easier to get the right fit instead of the swimming goggle strap.

OK, I got ahold of some ESS Profile NVG's and an Arena Flakjak, both on the Army list of approved goggles, at a good price used. I wish I could afford to buy two of everything, new, to test but that's life. Both worked well for my son at an outdoor field last weekend, both with the foam liner removed. That was outdoors, though, and not the humid, sweaty indoor environment.

Luckily, we got both lenses for the Profiles so we'll switch out the smoke lens for the clear next time we're indoors. Not sure how these could be much more ventilated than the cheapies we took a hot nail to for the purpose of opening up the vent holes but I also got some Cat Crap, which I very much hope will help.
