Who calls forth the king? Joseph speaks truth, per his usual style. I think I've made Jon something like 15 or so CD's and everyone seems to like them. I put together everything from Halo to movie soundtracks to anything I can think of that would sound cool to shoot it out to. Take a song like the Crystal Method's Keep Hope alive. Can anyone tell me what great movie assassination happened to that song? My obsessive love of movies tells me it is the very beginning of the replacement killers, a very silly Chow Yun Fat movie, but an excellent use of the techno song. I try to bring in stuff that a lot of folks haven't heard before, and I usually don't take requests like you are doing. My reasoning is this: Given a choice, some folks will listen to a bunch of crap music. Now, this is not always true but it seemed to definitely be the case the last time Jon decided to ask what everyone wanted to listen to. Bananaphone, 15 times in a row. Towards the end of the game, I believe I safety killed myself just to end the horrific noise in my brain.
It's also kind of hard to put together a good mix for CQB because you have to mix things up a lot, you can't just have 18 songs by the same artist or genre in the same short time. Similarly, you want a mix of the obscure and the songs people know from the mainstream artists. I have put everything from Elvis to the beginning theme from McGyver to the Metal gear Solid soundtracks. Also, you gotta feel the rhythm and flow to it, almost like a gunfight itself. You can't go from some pulse pounding techno to twangy country tunes.
My final advice is this: Avoid rap, at all costs. There's never any clean stuff, and keeping it clean is my major concern. I try extremely hard to keep all the music I give Jon clean, seeing as the younger more impressionable minds are there. As far as I know, there haven't been any complaints, but I definitely try to avoid that. I believe the only rap song I have ever put on an album is Long Hard times to come by TONE Z. The only reason I did go with it is because it is the Justified theme song, it's clean, and it is a perfect blend of bluegrass and hiphop.
Remember kids, no one should have to fight to Katy Perry songs, no matter how many Marine Corps videos she produces. I will also be bringing in 3 new mixes for the CQB event on Saturday, so please feel free to tell me what you guys think. I shall again be the man in the leather cowboy hat and the US Marshal badge.
